Weird Low-Light Bacteria Could Potentially Thrive on Mars
An international team of scientists has found that a strange type of bacteria can turn light into fuel in incredibly dim environments. Similar bacteria could someday help humans colonize Mars and expand our search for life on other planets, researchers said in a statement released with the new work.

Through physical play outdoors, your child develops confidence in herself as she sees her skills grow: "Watch me climb the monkey bars, look how high I can swing. Watch me, watch me!" Charon, Pluto’s largest known satellite, was discovered on this day in 1978 by James W. Christy. Christy suggested the name “Charon” as a more scientific sounding version of his wife’s nickname, Char. Coincidentally, Charon is the name of a Greek mythological figure, the ferryman of the dead. In Greek mythology, Charon is closely associated with Hades, whom the Romans call “Pluto.” https://go.nasa.gov/2tJJ5Fo IMAGE: Charon Complexity | 2015 | NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration

How has a father figure in your life influenc...

How has a father figure in your life influenced you? Our exhibition “Renoir: Father & Son/Painting & Cinema” unravels the relationship between celebrated filmmaker Jean Renoir and his father the great impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir. All throughout June, we’re sharing #Dadandme stories, featuring father and son duos in Philadelphia. Follow along! Meet Isaac Ewell, co-founder of OneHunted, a local tech-lifestyle brand encouraging men to be their authentic selves. Especially proud of his role as a father to his thirteen-year-old twin sons Che and Marley, Isaac shares how fatherhood has influenced his perspective. How has your dad inspired you? Isaac (Dad): Although my dad battled with addiction and wasn’t around a lot when I was young, I always saw him as a good dude. He was a calming force in my mom’s life. I pay homage to him by trying to be a good example to my sons. Che (son): He encourages people to see themselves as important, and that if someone else can be successful, so can they. Marley (son): He inspires me to do anything if I put my mind to it. He teaches me how to be different and tells me not to be mediocre. How have your sons inspired you? Isaac: I’ve always relished my role as a father. My sons inspire me to be better everyday. By better I mean learning to respond instead of react. How are you different and similar? Marley: My dad and I come from different backgrounds and have different personalities. He’s tougher. He’s more brave. We’re also both silly and love basketball. Che: We both really like shoes, basketball, and having fun with our friends and family. We’re both bossy. For the son(s): Jean Renoir spent a lot of time posing for his dad’s paintings. These long hours made them closer and introduced Jean to art and cinema. How do you learn from your dad? Marley: My dad taught me to always have good friends so you won’t be lost in the world. He says, “I’ll never go hungry and be homeless” because of his relationships. Che: My dad introduced us to basketball. He taught me how to spend my money wisely and always taught us that “expensive” doesn’t mean “the best. How would you give each other advice? Marley: Thank you for always being there and for telling us we can do anything. Che: Always keep trying, even if it doesn’t work out sometimes. Isaac to his sons: Don’t take yourself too seriously. Read as much as possible; it’s the only true path to freedom. Be grateful for the amazing life you have. Don’t make decisions out of fear. Advocate for yourself and others. Travel often.

Does your birthday fall between June 21–July 22? Here’s a little art inspired zodiac trivia for the next time you’re #seeingtheBarnes This pastel by Renoir depicts two nudes intertwined in a circular composition. One is teasing the other with a crab (presumably picked up from the surrounding beach)––a peculiar detail, which speaks to Renoir’s interest in antiquity. The crab motif can be traced back to Heracles’s battle with the giant crab Karkinos, a link that survives today in the astrological sign of Cancer. 🎨 Pierre-Auguste Renoir. “Two Nudes,” 1897

In 1998, Koko, a gorilla that had been taught to communicate through sign language, took to the internet in an online chatroom. This was first (and only) “inter-species” online chat ever conducted, and the results were: surprising. The Franklin Institute’s Chief Digital Officer Susan Poulton facilitated the event and tells her story, and, in memory of the extraordinary ape, provided the rare transcript for us to share. http://bit.ly/2KdxiuH Koko, who was born in 1971 and lived to be 46, passed away this week. http://bit.ly/2KdxiuH

When Koko the Gorilla Chatted Online
I woke up this morning and learned that Koko the gorilla had passed away peacefully in her sleep last night at the age of 46. Twenty years ago, I had the honor of producing the first ever inter-species online "live chat" with Koko and her caregiver Dr. Penny Patterson, part of a series of internet firsts we achieved at AOL (America Online).
