Will city Land Bank save North Philly nuns' community garden?
When Sister McKenna first settled in North Philadelphia, she started gardening on vacant lots as a way to engage the neighborhood children. With gentrification quickly moving west of Temple University, New Jerusalem - only six blocks west of campus - could be at risk of losing its sprawling urban oasis.

One-time drug dealer is no longer a dope | Stu Bykofsky

By the time he finished Benjamin Franklin High, he was a partner in a produce stand at 18th and Susquehanna with Jewell Williams, who would become a state representative and then sheriff. (Williams currently faces civil allegations of sexual harassment.)

Unbeknownst to Williams, the entrepreneurial Thorne had a side business selling pot and coke near where he lived at 17th and Diamond.

One-time drug dealer is no longer a dope | Stu Bykofsky - Philly
I ask Thorne, 52, if he was a successful drug dealer. He chuckles ruefully, not pridefully, and says he was able to finance college tuition for his siblings and keep the pantry stocked. "It kind of glorified me," he says.

“Mr. and Mrs. Abe Hirsch of 969 Franklin St. entertained General Dot and Mrs. Tom Thumb at dinner last Sunday evening. The affair was an elaborate one, and a number of Mr. and Mrs. Hirsch’s friends had been invited to meet the distinguished midgets.” Yes, that term is now politically incorrect.

Today is #NationalStrawberryDay! Do you know where the name Strawberry Mansion came from? Back between 1846 and 1867, the residents of Historic Strawberry Mansion (then known as Summerville) were farmers, who would often serve strawberries and cream to the public. They must have been delicious, because 150 years later, the neighborhood still carries the name!
