Trump's repeal of DACA: inside the movement to support Penn's "dreamers" in 2017
The Penn community navigated many immigration policy changes this year, one of the biggest being Trump's announcement to discontinue the Deferred Action for Arrivals program by March 2018. The program, which was enacted as an executive order under former President Barack Obama, protects 790,000 "dreamers" who entered the country without proper documentation as children.

You can almost never go wrong with fried potatoes. French fries, home fries, hash browns, tots, potato chips - every variation is good. But there's something about the Jewish potato pancake traditionally enjoyed during the Festival of Lights that's extra satisfying.

The year in petitions: what got Penn students riled up in 2017?

The election of President Donald Trump began with tear-filled protests in November last year, and continued with protests throughout 2017. Hours after the 1968 Wharton graduate was inaugurated, dozens of students walked out of their classes to demonstrate their opposition to his administration.

The year in petitions: what got Penn students riled up in 2017?
Activism has been a cornerstone of the Penn student experience for years, and 2017 was no different. Throughout the year, undergraduate and graduate students penned over a dozen strongly-worded letters and collected thousands of signatures for a wide range of issues.

"CCT transports over 3,500 riders a day, a disproportionate share of whom is indeed elderly, given Philadelphia’s growing aging population."

Reality Check: Riding SEPTA While Elderly - The Philadelphia Citizen
A measure of a city's character hinges on how well it treats its senior citizens. In Philly, one aspect of that is how easy it is for senior citizens to travel from their homes to the rest of the city. And on that front, Customized Community Transportation, the elderly-focused paratransit service supervised by SEPTA, leaves a lot to be desired.

Missed the Police Community Meeting last week...

Missed the Police Community Meeting last week? Here are some helpful tips from our local police: The police indicated that we do have a problem with packages delivered to front doors being stolen if left unattended, and it will likely get worse because of the holiday season. Some recommendations that came up in the discussion: * Arrange with the carrier to have packages delivered when someone is home and not leave a package if no one answers the door * Have packages delivered to your work place or a friend/neighbor who will be home * Have your packages delivered to a drop box, such as the 7-11 on 22nd St. (Amazon, UPS and others have drop box locations; check with your carrier or merchant). * If you see an unattended package at a neighbor's door, bring it home and give it to them later. * Report all package thefts to the police and alert your neighbors to do the same. In addition to helping the police see patterns, there's a chance of recovering your package, especially if the theft got caught on video. We welcome other suggestions for thwarting package theft in our neighborhood via George Leon.

"Getting around with young children on transit, biking, or even walking is still a more frustrating experience than it has to be, and the reasons for this have everything to do with public policy."

Philly is only walkable if you're an able-bodied childless adult | Opinion
Instead of decamping for the suburbs, more Philadelphians with young children have been choosing to raise their families in the city in recent years, recognizing that Philly can be an amazing place to raise kids. The city has a wealth of public amenities for families, like parks, libraries, and free outdoor activities.

Protesters, Trump, and mental health: how tour guides manage Penn's most sensitive topics

Carmen, a past member of Kite and Key and a 2017 Wharton graduate, recalled that three students died by suicide during her senior year and one of them was a close friend of hers.

In November 2016, 1968 Wharton graduate Donald Trump was elected president. Throughout his campaign, Trump frequently referred to his undergraduate degree to defend his intellectual capabilities.

Protesters, Trump, and mental health: how tour guides manage Penn's most sensitive topics
Every year, the student tour guides of the Kite and Key Society at Penn are tasked with selling Penn to the tens of thousands who visit its campus. Everything from academics to Greek life falls within the realm of topics that prospective students and their families might want to discuss.
