Naturally Philly: All the trees, shrubs and flowers you'll find at the Rail Park
Naturally Philly is a new Billy Penn column that explores the city's wildlife and plants - both familiar and extraordinary - that thrive or struggle in our urban environment. It won't be your typical walk in the park. When the ribbon is cut on June 14 for the city's newest open space, the Rail Park, visitors will experience a very different kind of village green.

Scientists believe the Great Pacific Garbage Patch contains more than 79,000 tons of plastic spread over an area three times the size of France. https://nbcnews.to/2G6ntZD

The Pacific Ocean has a plastic problem. Here's the bold plan to fix it.
In the Pacific Ocean halfway between California and Hawaii lies what's become known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a huge jumble of fishing nets, bottles, bags, and other plastic items as well as tiny bits of plastic debris. "It's a vast plastic soup," says Kahi Pacarro, executive director of Honolulu-based Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii.

“Interstellar clouds serve as the celestial cradles for nascent stars, which condense out of these enormous conglomerations of gas and dust.” https://lat.ms/2G7wkdt

Scientists develop a 3-D view of an interstellar cloud, where stars are born
Two astronomers from Greece have managed to model the three-dimensional structure of an interstellar gas cloud, and found that it's on the order of 10 times more spacious than it originally appeared. The shape and structure of Musca, described in the journal Science, could help scientists probe the mysterious origins and evolution of stars - and by extension, the planets that surround them.
