The Rowhouse Boom: Populist Victory or Philadelphia Noir?
The proudest moment for the Philadelphia rowhouse was in Chicago, of all places. A two-story "Workingman's House" was "put up at the Columbian Exposition," reported Talcott Williams in 1893.

Naturally Philly is a new Billy Penn column that explores the city's wildlife and plants - both familiar and extraordinary - that thrive or struggle in our urban environment. It won't be your typical walk in the park. When the ribbon is cut on June 14 for the city's newest open space, the Rail Park, visitors will experience a very different kind of village green.

In the evening, the Count asks him to write three post-dated letters, two (dated June 12 and 19) about his impending departure for home and another (dated June 29), stating that he has just left the castle. Jonathan writes in his journal, “I know now the span of my life. God help me!” *The novel, Dracula, is comprised of journal entries and letters, all dated, so throughout the year, we’ll be posting a day-by-day account of the plot of Dracula. Next up for our #internationalmuseumday feature is this marvelous mid-west medical museum, the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago (USA). ・・・ "This reddish-brown, extremely bitter liquid was used as treatment for many afflictions, mental and physical. Laudanum is an opium tincture containing opium alkaloids: morphine and codeine. It was named by Paracelsus, “the father of toxicology,” and was believed to mean “something to be praised” in Latin. Used throughout Victorian society as a muscle relaxer, cough suppressant, etc., the medicine is highly addictive. It has the reputation of having inspired writers, poets and artists, such as Charles Dickens, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Thomas De Quincey. In 1868 after numerous overdoses of the once over-the-counter drug, restrictions were put into place and the bottle had to be clearly labeled as a poison."

First on our #internationalmuseumday feature:...

First on our #internationalmuseumday feature: Want to see a medical collection with bite? The Wellcome Collection in London (UK) has a new exhibition on teeth open now through September, and it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg…it’s free. ・・・ This is a late 18th century ivory obturator with human teeth, believed to have belonged to Sir Edmund Burke. . Edmund Burke was an Irish-born writer and politician, widely regarded as the philosophical founder of modern conservatism. He moved to London in 1750, where he served as an MP for 28 years. This prosthesis appears to have had the dual function of providing an upper set of teeth – human teeth riveted into the ivory base – and sealing a hole, front right in the roof of the mouth, suggesting that the wearer had a cleft palate. . You can see these and more at our new #Teethexhibition opening on 17 May. From folk remedies and tooth fairies to barber-surgeons and professional dentists, Teeth tells the tale of our pursuit of a pain-free mouth and the perfect smile.
