Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) painted “The Card Players” from 1890–1892. The one that hangs at the Barnes is the largest of several versions completed by the artist. Speaking to the might and strength inherent in Cézanne’s work, Dr. Barnes wrote: “The essential and fundamental effect of Cézanne’s form, in its best estate, is the quality of power, rendered in legitimate painting terms. Perhaps no other painter has so successfully made power the keynote of his design; not even Michelangelo…” Look for this monumental work in the main room of our Collection Gallery. 🎨 Paul Cézanne.
