Agnes Martin: The Untroubled Mind/Works from the Daniel W. Dietrich II Collection

Overview

Philadelphia Museum of Art - Exhibitions - Agnes Martin: The Untroubled Mind/Works from the Daniel W. Dietrich II Collection
Visionary and idiosyncratic, Agnes Martin (1912-2004) aimed to express universal emotional states in her precise compositions. This intimate installation explores the ideas that shaped Agnes Martin's minimalist art, and reflects upon her enduring friendship with longtime supporter Daniel W. Dietrich II. In addition to paintings, it features drawings, a sculpture, and archival materials.

On this day in 1471, Albrecht Dürer was born ...

On this day in 1471, Albrecht Dürer was born in Nuremberg, Germany. Dürer is considered the most influential artist of the Northern Renaissance. An innovative printmaker and painter, Dürer produced works that inspired many subsequent artists throughout history. #LOOKSLOWLY at this oil painting in the Barnes collection, created by an unknown 17th-century artist who combined multiple compositions originally drafted by Dürer. Although small in scale, “Saint Jerome and the Lion” contains a vast amount of detail. The rugged cliffs are filled with nooks and crannies; a church is located atop the cliffs; and off in the horizon a paradisiacal castle appears to float on the water. In a reduced palette of browns, the artist captures the humility and simplicity that characterize the hermitic Saint Jerome, who is pictured in the foreground with a book, cross, and his companionate lion. On your next visit, look for this piece in room 4 and search for these small details: a bluebell plant in the foreground (bluebells have long been associated with humility and everlasting love), a lizard on the cliff by the saint’s outstretched hand, and tiny ships on the water’s horizon. 🎨 After Albrecht Dürer. “Saint Jerome and the Lion,” probably first half of the 16th century

Happy birthday to Henri Rousseau, a French Post-Impressionist painter best known for his vibrant jungle scenes. Interestingly, despite his prolific painting of jungle scenes, Rousseau never set foot in a real jungle, but rather drew inspiration from botanical gardens in Paris, taxidermied animals, illustrated books, and stories relayed by soldiers who had served during the French expedition to Mexico. This is just one of several amazing works by Rousseau that you can see on your next visit to the Barnes! 🎨 Henri Rousseau. “Monkeys and Parrot in the Virgin Forest (Singes et perroquet dans la forêt vierge),” c. 1905–1906

On this day in 1932, Amelia Earhart took off for Ireland to become the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Even as new technology for radio and navigation was developed, Earhart continued to fly strictly by instinct. While working to improve her aviation skills, she and her husband planned a solo flight across the Atlantic. In 1932, they announced that on the fifth anniversary of Charles Lindbergh’s across the Atlantic, Amelia would attempt the same. Earhart landed in Ireland after a thirteen hour flight. Henri Edmond Cross was born on this day in 1856. Originally named "Delacroix," he changed his name to the anglicized "Cross" to avoid confusion with the earlier artist. In 1884, Cross co-founded the "Société des Artistes Indépendants" where he met and befriended the neo-Impressionist painters Seurat and Signac, all of whom are represented in the Barnes Foundation collection. These artists, inspired by new optical theories, emphasized the use of separate, but interwoven touches of paint and a bright palette of contrasting hues to achieve greater vibrancy of color in the viewer’s eye. 🎨 Henri Edmond Cross. “Two Women by the Shore, Mediterranean,” 1896

The Pacific Ocean has a plastic problem. Here's the bold plan to fix it.
In the Pacific Ocean halfway between California and Hawaii lies what's become known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a huge jumble of fishing nets, bottles, bags, and other plastic items as well as tiny bits of plastic debris.
