Please join Juntos & Galaei Phillyi Monday morning at 11:30 for a press conference/rally to demand that ICE #FreeIvan and allows him to be reunited with his husband. On January 31, Jose “Ivan” Nuñez was attending his marriage interview at USCIS with his husband Paul fully expecting to be in and out of the office. Paul and Ivan are in love and have been married since April 9th, 2016. What should have been a dream come true ended in a nightmare. In the middle of his interview ICE agents stormed into the interview and handcuffed him without warning. We believe that love has no borders and ask you to join us in demanding that ICE free Ivan from detention so he may be reunited with his husband. If Ivan was to be deported back to Mexico, Ivan’s life would be in jeopardy due to his sexuality. His sister, who is also queer, is currently in hiding with her partner back home and close friends of the family have been severely assaulted for their sexual orientation. As of January 13th, USCIS has deemed Ivan and Paul’s marriage petition valid and Ivan has passed his Reasonable Fear interview, meaning there is no reason why he should still be in detention.

On February 15, 2018, Governor Tom Wolf submitted a map to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court that combined features of legislative submissions but, according to an analysis by a gerrymandering expert, was statistically more fair than the Republican leaders' submission. The governor's map is fair, is constitutional, and complies with the court's order.

Think back to the last concert you saw, and ask yourself what it looked like. Do visions of black-painted walls, flashing lights, and overcrowded bars come to mind? Perhaps there were a few chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, or maybe a red velvet curtain framing the stage; but otherwise, the space was probably unremarkable and easy to forget.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Today’s post comes from the Allegheny National Forest (ANF), Pennsylvania’s only National Forest. This photograph was taken in August 1926 and shows two lovers on the trail to Heart’s Content near Warren, PA. At this site in particular, the U.S. Forest Service conducted a series of experiments and ecological studies that focused on developing new methods to protect America’s beautiful wealth of land. A few examples of the new sustainability concepts introduced at ANF in the 1920s included preserving seeds for future growth, maintaining watersheds, and guarding wildlife habitats. The purpose of this mission was to create a long lasting and healthy forest, one that generations to come could all explore and enjoy. So on this day dedicated to love, show your affection to not only the people you care about, but the places you appreciate too! This post was written by Megan Kelly, Research and Writing Intern at the National Archives at Philadelphia. #happyvalentinesday #valentine #valentinesday #alleghenynationalforest #ANF #forest #love #hisory #archives Citation: Photograph from Heart's Content Trail; Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, Timber Management Research Station; RG095 U.S. Forest Service; National Archives at Philadelphia (NAID: 28208828) and (HMS ID/Record Entry ID: PH-3926).

Al Gury, a Fleisher faculty member and chair of the painting department at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, has recently published Foundations of Drawing, a comprehensive guide to drawing as an art form including historical information, materials and technique, and step-by-step demonstrations. Join us for a discussion about his latest book, a drawing demonstration, and a book signing. Gury received his BA in fine arts and humanities from Saint Louis University, a certificate of art from PAFA, and an MFA from the University of Delaware. He is a recipient of the Cresson Traveling Fellowship. He is represented by F.A.N. Gallery in Philadelphia. His paintings have been exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Capitol in Washington, D.C., Washington and Lee University, the University of Pennsylvania, and at galleries across the country. He writes for American Artists and has published two other books: Alla Prima: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Direct Painting and Color for Painters: A Guide to Traditions and Practice. The Sanctuary Series was developed in support of Fleisher’s mission to make art accessible to everyone. The series provides low-commitment learning experiences for our creative community to explore its interest in the arts. Supporting and supplementing Fleisher’s regular class and workshop offerings, Sanctuary Series events range from artist talks, film screenings, musical and dance performances, as well as hands-on workshops. The Sanctuary Series is free and open to the public.

Much like a foraging walk, this intimate talk provides a context for Katya Gorker’s evolving art practice across converging media. As a Russian immigrant grappling with cultural identity, Katya has always been sensitive to language and the complexities of translating personal experiences. This sensitivity has informed her research and artistic practices. Her interests in film range from the immediacy of digital media’s impact on time and collective memory to personal ethnography and the shifting boundaries of cultural identity. She is currently in production on a personal ethnographic documentary and trans-media project, Chekhov’s Dogs, that traces the cultural significance of mushroom foraging in the Russian diaspora. The film draws parallels between mycology and immigration, cultural identity and adaptation in the age of globalization. The Sanctuary Series was developed in support of Fleisher’s mission to make art accessible to everyone. The series provides low-commitment learning experience for our creative community to explore its interest in the arts. PART TWO: ADVANCED HOTHOUSE METHODS March 6 – 9 Advanced HotHouse Methods is designed for participants who already have some foundation in the physical and vocal practices of the Wilma HotHouse, either through taking Part One of the HotHouse intensive or through a previous intensive with Blanka Zizka. Advanced HotHouse Methods follows a similar structure as Part One, but will progress into new content. Justin Jain introduces the next level in the Method of Mr. Terzopoulos, which focuses on the vocal aspect of this training. In the second portion of each class, Blanka Zizka delves deeply into text work and what it means to fully embody the text in performance, which as Blanka explains in the Wilma HotHouse's New York Times feature, “is to have emotion, body, voice, all in fluid expression.” SCHEDULE PART TWO: Tuesday, March 6: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Wednesday, March 7: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Thursday, March 8: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM Friday, March 9: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM ... Click on the ticket link to purchase tickets for both part one and part two of the HotHouse Intensive. For questions about the class call Education Assistant Rachel Beecher at 215-893-9456 ext. 113. TUITION: $250 for one week or $400 if you take both Wilma HotHouse Intensive: Part One and Part 2. NOTE: "Introduction to HotHouse Methods" or a previous intensive with Blanka Zizka is a prerequisite for taking "Advanced HotHouse Methods." * All HotHouse intensives are designed for advanced acting students and professional actors, but curious and brave directors, playwrights, educators, etc. are always welcome. * Come prepared to move. The work can be rigorous but adjustments will be made for various body types, injuries, and physical limitations
