One Liberty Place, 1650 Market Street, Philadelphia.

    Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia
As a form of cinematic activism, Philadelphia (1993) attempted to reform the public understanding of AIDS in a time when ignorance and fear of the disease fueled prejudice and hate. The film is not merely set in the city of its title, but in a large part, the people of Philadelphia performed it.

I'm pleased to share that what started out as an experimental project has become an active community of researchers and experts.

This week, Mx. Rogers comes to the neighborhood.

Philly's queer cabaret examines the truths (and myths) of Mister Rogers' signature kindness
The first black-and-white frames of Morgan Neville's Won't You Be My Neighbor show the familiar Fred Rogers at the piano, coolly attempting to place value and meaning on his approach to communicating with children by way of modulation. As a trained classical composer, he knew that some key changes could be managed with ease, and others could not.

We are pleased to announce that The Wilma Theater is one of the recipients of The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage's 2018 project grants. The grant will fund THERE, an ensemble-devised work, led by Blanka Zizka, which adapts Lebanese American poet Etel Adnan’s book-length poem 'There: In the Light and the Darkness of the Self and of the Other' and contemplates existential questions of personal and community identity and conflict, in an environment created by Berlin-based artist Rosa Barba. The work will premiere as part of the 2019 Fringe Festival. #PewArtsGrants

The Engaging Males of Color (EMOC) initiative...

The Engaging Males of Color (EMOC) initiative of DBHIDS will be holding our next storytelling event, Beyond Expectations, next week Thursday, June 21, from 6:30-8:30pm at Congreso Pan American Academy Charter School. The theme of this upcoming event is men telling their personal, compelling stories of navigating the opioid epidemic. We know that this issue has gripped national headlines, but most importantly, we need to hear from those who have overcome and who are moving from these challenges, through resiliency and self-determination, to lead healthier lives. Below is the online link where folks can register and I have also attached the flyer. Please feel free to forward on to your colleagues and networks. https://my.firstpersonarts.org/single/PSDetail.aspx?psn=56494 I hope to see you and your folks on June 21!
