Just wondering if you've received any reports on how much rain fell in Southern Sussex County today? I'm grateful that the temps were so warm. All this could have been snow. I believe the general ratio rain to snow is 1 inch rain 1 foot snow.

Hi everyone! A few things to note with the weather through the weekend: 1. Today will be very warm (we already have a few sites in the 60s at 5 AM!) with periods of rain through the day. There is a potential for heavy rain leading to localized flooding in poor drainage areas. 2. Don't let the warm weather today fool you! We're still in January and expecting a big cool down late tonight into Saturday. Any standing water from the rain today could freeze leading to icy driving conditions tomorrow. 3. A wintry mix of sleet and snow is expected across the Lehigh Valley, NW NJ, and the southern Poconos very late tonight into Saturday morning. See the attached graphic for forecast ice amounts. Good morning! A cold start to the day (see the 5 AM observations graphic for a sample), therefore watch for some icy spots early this morning. This afternoon will feature milder temperatures with many areas getting into the 40s. Even warmer air arrives for the second half of the week, although that will also be accompanied by some rain.

After our almost 2 week period of temperatures near or below freezing, a lot of ice has developed on area water ways. This loop, using GOES-16 data (the latest geostationary satellite), shows ice on the Delaware Bay. This loop roughly covers Tuesday morning through Tuesday afternoon (this particular loop uses a certain kind of satellite imagery that is only available during daylight hours). You can see the ice moving with the tides through the day. There are also a few passing high clouds that are visible on this loop.

If more Philly kids eat free breakfast, will achievement rise? This school says yes.

Superintendent William R. Hite and other dignitaries toured Key, at 8th and Wolf in South Philadelphia, Tuesday to tout increased participation in the school breakfast program district wide – an effort, they say, that has paid dividends, with increased student attendance and achievement.

If more Philly kids eat free breakfast, will achievement rise? This school says yes.
"If kids are hungry, they're not hearing me," said a veteran Philadelphia fifth-grade teacher said. "They're more alert; they're more upbeat. They pay attention. More kids eating breakfast in school is a total positive." - Kristen A. Graham, Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News

Though the freezing rain has moved out of the area, we will continue to see hazardous conditions for walking and driving overnight through the Tuesday morning commute. Temperatures will be below freezing overnight so any ice accumulation on Monday will not have a chance to melt. In addition, water in areas that are above freezing Monday evening, may refreeze overnight. If you are going out overnight or on Tuesday morning, be prepared for slippery conditions. Use extra care during the Tuesday morning commute.

A light wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain is likely across a portion of the area tomorrow (Monday, January 8th) afternoon and evening. Accumulating snow/sleet is most likely N/W of Philadelphia. SE PA, C & S NJ, NE MD and N DE have the greatest risk to see light icing with freezing rain (see the latest forecast graphics below). Even though amounts are expected to be light, there is a potential for significant travel impacts and considerable delays if freezing rain coincides with the Monday evening rush. We’ll provide updates to tomorrow's forecast later today.

Updated Sun Jan 7: The low temperature reached 4 degrees this morning at Philadelphia. Although the temperature did not fall below zero, we tied the daily record low set in 2014, when it also reached 4 degrees. Post from Sat Jan 6: The forecast low temperature for Philadelphia is +2 degrees for early Sunday morning. However, it remains possible that the temperature could briefly fall below zero if the wind goes totally calm around daybreak. If the temperature at Philadelphia falls below zero, it would be the first time in the 21st Century. The last sub-zero reading at Philadelphia was -5 degrees on January 19, 1994. There was a total of only 23 days during the entire 20th Century when the temperature at Philadelphia fell below zero.

Good Friday morning NWS Mount Holly FB followers and visitors to NJ DE e PA e MD. Record cold is on the way, especially for Saturday and Saturday night. You should be prepared to safely heat your home and have a stash of warm clothes in your car, as well as a charged cell phone, in case you get stuck in a remote area. By Sunday night, the persistence of subfreezing temperatures that began just after Christmas, will be the longest such stretch generally dating back to February 1979 (exception Reading, PA -January 2000). This cold spell is also ranked top 8 longest stretch in the historical database for Philly-Wilmington, Trenton, Allentown, Reading and Atlantic City. Next wintry weather event potential dates are Monday January 8th and then late next week between the 11th-13th. Attached are two graphics...one showing the coldest wind chill expected Saturday morning and the other is a graphic expressing confidence of more than 1/4 inch of frozen water equivalent precipitation (more than 2 inches of snow or an icing problem). This latter graphic is a low chance for such occurrence of that much snow. However, small amounts of snow and/or ice appear likely, at least in PA and northern NJ.
