Born to Nigerian immigrants, Joy Ike’s music, voice, and writing have drawn comparisons to female musicians such as Corinne Bailey Rae, Norah Jones, Regina Spektor, and Fiona Apple. But her percussive piano-playing and soaring vocals give homage to her African upbringing. Leaving her career as a publicist in 2008, Joy has spent the last nine years playing thousands of shows across the country. She has had the opportunity to share the stage and open for Jeffrey Gaines, Sara Groves, Seth Glier, Cody Chestnutt, Allen Toussaint, and Tyrone Wells to name a few. A write-up on NPR's All Things Considered says "The depth of subjects she tackles in her poetic lyrics are perfectly complemented by a unique blend of neo-soul, with just the right dash of pop... a truly compelling act to watch in person, with the ability to create an intimate setting in locations big and small." The Sanctuary Series was developed in support of Fleisher’s mission to make art accessible to everyone. The series provides low-commitment learning experience for our creative community to explore its interest in the arts. Supporting and supplementing Fleisher’s regular class and workshop offerings, Sanctuary Series events range from artist talks, film screenings, musical and dance performances, as well as hands on workshops. The Sanctuary Series is free and open to the public.
