Jan van Goyen was born on this day in 1596 (that’s nearly 420 years ago!) in Leiden, the Netherlands. An influential landscape artist of the “Golden Age” of Dutch painting, he is represented at the Barnes by “The Square Watch-Tower,” painted in 1651. #LOOKSLOWLY: This large river scene is one his most outstanding works in an American collection. Pay close attention to Van Goyen’s accomplished use of earth tones––note how they seem dredged from his depiction of the riverbed, but are contrasted against a delicate, broken sky of pale blue. 🎨 Jan van Goyen.
