GW Childs Elementary School instruments will be part of this wonderful project organized by Temple Contemporary happening this weekend in Philadelphia. We know that the creative arts are an essential part of public school education, and we're lucky to have a great music teacher in Mr. Taber working at GW Childs. He's currently raising funds to purhase some new guitars for his students. Please look in the comments below for a link to help make this happen! https://www.npr.org/sections/deceptivecadence/2017/11/30/567064772/the-healing-sound-of-a-broken-orchestra

Philadelphia's Symphony For a Broken Orchestra
In a cheerful rehearsal room at Temple University, a few dozen professional musicians inspect the instruments that they'll be playing to debut an audacious piece of music by a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer. The composition is called "Symphony For a Broken Orchestra" and, fittingly, these instruments are all broken.

Our next General Meeting is coming up on Sunday, December 10! We’ll be giving an update on our rooftop playground development, sharing details on our first big fundraising event, and sharing more ideas on how to support our local school. We’ll also talk about the January enrollment process for those of us with soon-to-be kindergartens!

Board Member & current President Jennifer Devor was recently featured on 20 by Seventy, the Committee of 70's podcast. The topic was "choosing" Philadelphia as a young professional and of course, public education is a big part of that discussion. G.W. Childs gets a nice shout-out, as does our principal Dr. Coutts!

The "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" Episode by The podcast for people who expect more from Philly
Philadelphia is the rare "Rust Belt" city that's growing. That's thanks in part to success in hanging onto recent college graduates. But, as much as these Millennials might love the city, they aren't sure they can stay.

Improvements coming to Vare and Childs - South Philly Review
By Bill Gelman Some positive news has come out of last week's community meeting concerning the future of Vare Recreation Center, 2600 Morris St. The "indefinite" timeline mentioned in last week's cover story ("Vare Recreation Center is closed, for now") now seems to have a six-week window for work to be completed on the first floor of the building.

WOW, Alisha! Great work on your part to make our community a fun, safe place to learn! We're proud of you! “Childs is a neighborhood school whose students come from different backgrounds and have different personalities. It’s a school where we come together to work as one. We learn from each other, push each other, and help each other succeed.”

Eighth-grader excels at G.W. Childs school
When eighth-grader Alisha Lou isn't in her classes, she is helping other students, teachers and staff at G.W. Childs Elementary School. "I've been going to this school for eight years," Lou said. "Childs does a great job of providing us with different opportunities. It's a good school."
