"Sometimes known as 'sea nomads,' the Bajau have lived at sea for more than 1,000 years, on small houseboats that float in the waters off Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines." https://theatln.tc/2qRFzcJ

How Asia's Super Divers Evolved for a Life At Sea
One gene, known as PDE10A, stood out. It does many things, but it's especially active in the thyroid gland, and controls the release of hormones. The version of PDE10A that's common in the Bajau is associated with higher levels of thyroid hormones, and those hormones, in turn, make spleens grow bigger-at least, in rodents.

"While the average American diet amounts to about 5 kg of carbon dioxide emissions per day, the typical meat- and dairy-heavy diet amounts to three times that. By bringing those resource-intensive diets more in line with the average American diet, we could save 0.27 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in a single day – that’s the equivalent of removing 661 million cars off the road." http://bit.ly/2qSwikW

A Surprising Solution to Lowering Our Greenhouse Gas Emissions
This April marks the 48th Earth Month, offering us an opportunity to reflect on our collective impact on the one and only planet we call home. Many simple life changes can make a big difference - switching our household electricity provider to renewable or carbon-neutral energy sources, replacing inefficient household electronics, using cold water to wash our clothes, signing up for a composting service, and recycling, just to name a few.

“Known as gray ghosts because they are only rarely glimpsed, they differ from other types of caribou, which are plentiful on the tundra.” https://nyti.ms/2F3QtQR

Gray Ghosts, the Last Caribou in the Lower 48 States, Are 'Functionally Extinct'
HELENA, Mont. - The battle to save the so-called gray ghosts - the only herd of caribou in the lower 48 states - has been lost. A recent aerial survey shows that this international herd of southern mountain caribou, which spends part of its year in the Selkirk Mountains of northern Idaho and Washington near the Canadian border, has dwindled to just three animals and should be considered "functionally extinct," experts say.

Researchers in Singapore have developed a robot that can assemble an IKEA chair. http://bit.ly/2qJ98Nz

Robots can now assemble an IKEA chair in 20 minutes-without fighting
After years of failed attempts, a research team in Singapore has successfully taught a pair of robots to do something that many humans still can't: build an IKEA chair. The wooden Stefan chair is not the world's first piece of AI-assembled flatpack furniture: Robots at MIT built a simple Lack table in 2013.
