Have you noticed that the outdoor seating plaza outside Malelani Cafe Mt. Airy has been torn up this week? That's actually a good thing - it's the fourth of six pocket parks coming together on Germantown Avenue courtesy of the Mt. Airy Business Improvement District. You may have noticed the improvements on the corner of Germantown & Sedgwick outside the Mt. Airy Playground, and you've probably seen the new landscaping and Little Free Library outside of Fino's on the corner of Carpenter Lane. On Tuesday, come out to the original - Trolley Car Park, between the SEPTA brake yard and Mermaid Lounge - for a reception and fundraiser for the pocket parks to learn more. There's no obligation to donate, but donations help to add amenities like benches, tables, and the like.

Inga Saffron's story last month outlined a lot of the development changing the landscape of Mt. Airy. One project not covered was the one proposed for the corner of Cresheim Road and Sedgwick Street. Pictured here, an investor who bought 7000 & 7002 Cresheim would have torn down two intact, recently-inhabited houses on the end of a full-block row of two-story rowhomes and replaced them with a three-story, eight-unit apartment building. Several years ago, unbeknownst to its residents, that block's zoning was changed from single-family residential to multi-family RM-1, so this proposal was allowed BY RIGHT. Thanks to an appeal from Weatham Town Watch, on the grounds that the proposal did not conform with the setbacks of the neighboring houses, the permit was revoked. This entire process underscores the importance of appropriate zoning and planning. And hey, whattaya know, the Philadelphia City Planning Commission has been studying our area and will release its Upper Northwest District Plan, encompassing Mt. Airy, Germantown, and Chestnut Hill, NEXT MONDAY, June 18th, at Lovett Library & Park. As the final one of 18 districts in the City's 2035 Comprehensive Plan, this is a big deal. The Commission will have two sessions to choose from: 3:30pm and 6pm. (They're the same session, just two times to choose from.) Plan to be there, then stick around for our Music Monday with Danie Jackson, the Ramble Pizza food truck, and beer tastings from Attic Brewing Company.

Hey hey, it's Wellness Wednesday! This evening, Gilda from Relax Therapy Spa (7151 Germantown Ave, upstairs) will kick off her eight-week yoga-and-learn series on the chakras. These will happen each of the next eight Wednesdays at Lovett Park, and they are all FREE. (We encourage you to book a massage at her studio, though!) Gilda is also one of the sponsors of the 2018 Mt. Airy Holistic Health Fair, which is on the schedule for this Saturday, June 2nd. The weather is looking mighty iffy, however, and we'll make the call tomorrow. We've got a rain date lined up, so stay tuned for that. But first, tonight: come out for Yoga & Movement with Gilda!

All right folks, it is midweek and we are happy to roll out the very first Wellness Wednesday at Lovett Park! (If you already subscribe to Sage Integrative Health Center's mailing list, you already knew this.) Wendy Romig, chief clinician at Sage (located at 538 Carpenter Lane, just down the street from the co-op), will lead a discussion at Lovett at noon (possibly on The Porch, weather depending) on how to get your energy level up heading into the summer. It's the first in a series that we hope to happen every Wednesday, and Wendy will be there the first Wednesday of the month through the rest of the summer. Take a bag lunch and see her today, then visit Sage amongst the trees (and other practitioners) at the 2018 Mt. Airy Holistic Health Fair on Saturday, June 2nd.

Congrats to our friends at East Mt. Airy Neig...

Congrats to our friends at East Mt. Airy Neighbors (EMAN) and West Mt. Airy Neighbors (WMAN) on a successful Mt. Airy Day on Saturday! Great turnout, great times. In case you missed it, it was WMAN's big breakout of their new logo - available on tote bags and on their brand new web site. ALSO: As you know, the Streets Department project to restore and improve Lincoln Drive is underway. This Wednesday at 7pm, WMAN will host a meeting at USG-Unitarian Society of Germantown (6511 Lincoln Drive) to consider Streets' option to remove one of the Drive's parking lanes as part of the project.

    WMAN
The Lincoln Drive Restoration Project includes various improvements to Lincoln Drive between Ridge Avenue and Wayne Avenue. Roadway improvements include milling and resurfacing, replacement of the guide rail and median barrier, and other drainage improvements. Along with these roadway improvements, a new architectural finish will be placed on the retaining wall, just north of Forbidden Drive.
