Mural Arts Philadelphia added 59 new photos.

Over the weekend, we were excited to be a part of Philly Free Streets 2017! This people-powered initiative temporarily closes a designated street route to cars, so that people can walk, bike, and play (and paint!). This year’s car-free route connected the Historic District and El Centro de Oro in Fairhill, with Mural Arts activations along the way. Four of our staff artists—Nathaniel Lee, David McShane, Willis Nomo Humphrey, and James Daniel Burns—were at work on ground murals and parklets along Saturday’s route. We welcomed the community to relax in the parklet in front of HACE Management Company on North 5th Street and enjoy outdoor games with our Mural Arts Education department and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation in front of our mural at Al Aqsa. Artist Stephanie Acevedo led a community paint day at 5th and Somerset, where many took part in a new mural-in-progress for El Bohio restaurant. Photos by Eddie E-Luks

When Philly Free Streets debuted last year, shutting down South Street and following MLK Drive into Fairmount Park, the biggest concern seemed to be a lack of diversity. Some 30,000 to 40,000 people walked, ran, biked or partook in the streetside activities, but only an estimated 27 percent were people of color.
