Blockbuster Video sign rewinds time in South Philly

On the corner of 24th Street and Passyunk Avenue, among the food trucks, SEPTA buses, and passersby, there stands a 78-foot high yellow and blue sign shaped like a videocassette tape with one word: Blockbuster.

The dozens of Philadelphia area locations were among them. The Blockbuster at 3300 Aramingo Avenue became a 7-Eleven. The 6810 Rising Sun Avenue shop turned into a Smoker's Zone. 7700 Crittenden Street no longer sold videotapes, but eyeglasses as a Visionworks.

There is a spot in South Philadelphia that is an anachronism. It's a relic of a recent past that represents a tradition no longer relevant to most. It's an indicator of a simpler era where a night staying home began with an outside destination.

Great Job Kyle Shenandoah!!.... Recruiting more than 50 city employers and agencies, like SEPTA and PECO, featuring nearly a 100 job offers, Shenandoah says the upcoming event hopes to reach as many South Philly residents as possible. From the University of Penn to the Urban League of Philadelphia, close to a dozen organizational partnerships from around the city are working to make the fair a reality. https://southphillyreview.com/second-annual-career-fair-in-grays-ferry-set-for-june-2-7e96be7de448

Second annual career fair in Grays Ferry set for June 2
While teaching first and second grade, Grays Ferry Civic Association Vice President Kyle Shenandoah conducted an experiment to maintain order in the rowdy classroom. Assigning students various tasks, like sharpening pencils or attending to the bathroom, he noticed a shift in their behavior - a correlation, he'd come to realize, that also exists in his backyard.

Good Afternoon Neighbors! This Tuesday, May 22th, SEPTA is having a public hearing for the new Bus Route 49; this bus route will connect South Philly directly into University City and Brewery Town. This will be a monumental change for our community! After many revisions it is in it's initial stages of development but we need you to show support! I believe Route 49 will: 1. Bring jobs from University City to South Philly 2. Create access for disabled & seniors residents into University City 3. Connect people to health resources (CHOP, VA, & Penn Medicine) 4. Establish diverse travel options for residents who need access to the regional rail via 30th Street station It has taken more than three years for this route to finally reach this stage. SEPTA needs your input or it will be scrapped again. Details Date: May 22nd, 2018 Location: 1234 Market St Time: 12pm & 5pm If you cannot attend but still want to get involved and show support, please write an email to serviceplanning@septa.org no later than 5/23/18.
