The Literature Department of the Free Library...

The Literature Department of the Free Library of Philadelphia presents a night with local author Brad Windhauser who will discuss his latest novel The Intersection: When a white driver critically injures a black bicyclist, the residents in a tense, gentrifying South Philadelphia neighborhood can't decide whether to unite, hide, or explode. Ms. Rose wrestles with ways to effectively organize the community and still be true to the neighborhood she fears may have outgrown her. Carol Jones, the mother of the bicyclist, is drawn back to the neighborhood she fled years ago for posh suburbia and finds roots deeper than she realized. Michael, the driver and recent home owner in the neighborhood, must conquer his guilt over the accident while struggling with personal betrayal. By allowing strangers to help him, he discovers ties he didn#39;t know he deserved. Their intersecting lives test the neighbors--established and new--in ways they never expected. Below is a brief biography of Mr. Windhauser: Originally from Southern California, Mr. Windhauser now lives in Philadelphia. He has an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte and is an Associate Professor (Teaching/Instruction) of writing at Temple University. He#39;s the author of two Philadelphia-set novels: Regret (2007) and The Intersection (2016) and his short stories have appeared in The Baltimore Review, Santa Fe Writer#39;s Project Journal, Ray#39;s Road Review, Northern Liberties Review, DOAB, and Jonathan. Mr. Windhauser#39;s reviews have appeared in Philaldelphia Review of Books. Long-awaited Rail Park opens first phase
The opening of Philadelphia 's long-awaited Rail Park means more than just a public green space. To many, it means residential development, it means commercial growth, and-possibly most importantly-it means a heightened sense of community in Philly's Center City. At least that's the takeaway city officials stressed Thursday morning during the opening of the park's first phase.

Gentrification will follow the Rail Park's launch. Here's why some neighbors welcome that.
This week brings the long-awaited opening of the Rail Park, a rails-to-trails project in Philadelphia's Callowhill neighborhood that's been in the works since 2003. With the June 14 launch of Phase 1, a quarter-mile stretch of the former Reading Viaduct that starts at Broad and Noble Street and curves southwest to Vine and 11th Street, the park will give the formerly industrial neighborhood a much-needed public green space.
