In their 1963 song "South Street," when the Orlons referred to the "hippest street in town," they were unquestionably referring to South Street on the eastern side of Broad. We don't remember quite that far back, but according to our memory, South Street East has always dominated South Street West in terms of energy, pedestrian traffic, and the sheer number of businesses.

POLS ON THE STREET: Don't Tax You, Don't Tax Me; Tax That Man Behind That Tree
BY JOE SHAHEELI Just by looking at the calendar, it's obvious that all proposed tax hikes face an uphill battle both on Capitol Hill and in City Hall this year. That's because the all-important political races of the next 12 months - in the statewide November general election and in the 2019 municipal primary - are underway now.

Odunde Festival carries on, brimming with African pride as its founder would have wanted

A day before this year’s celebration — featuring food, dance and crafts — the city recognized Fernandez by renaming the 2300 block of South Street, the epicenter of Odunde, as “Lois Fernandez Way.”

Odunde Festival carries on, brimming with African pride as its founder would have wanted
Despite dreary and sometimes drippy skies, Philadelphia celebrated the 43rd annual Odunde Festival Sunday the way in which its late founder would have wanted: with unbridled enthusiasm for African culture. Lois Fernandez died last August at age 81.

Philly’s 43rd Odunde Festival celebrates African spirituality and cultural connection

Oludina remembers Odunde in its early days as a three-day block party. Now in its 43rd year, the week-long festival is one the largest African-American festivals in the country, concluding Sunday with the procession, as well as food, crafts, and musical performances at 23rd and South streets.

This year was its first without founder Lois Fernandez, who died in August 2017 at the age of 81. City officials named the 2300 block of South Street after Fernandez on Saturday.

But at the Odunde festival in South Philly on Sunday, that tributary of the Delaware became a kind of altar as practitioners of Ifa, a belief system related to the Yoruba religion of Nigeria, processed to the South Street Bridge where about a hundred people gathered to celebrate Osun, the river goddess, as a way to welcome the Yoruba new year.
