Philadelphia 2nd Alarmers Association added 2...

A long 3 Days for the Philadelphia Fire Department. May 30, 1989...... By Joe O'Dowd, Daily News Staff Writer A fire that burned for three days in the Penn Mutual Building on Walnut Street near 6th was deliberately set, the Philadelphia fire department ruled today. More than 100 firefighters were injured as they fought the eight-alarm blaze on the ninth floor of the high rise office building from May 30 to June 1. Lt. Jack Christmas, spokesman for the fire commissioner's office, said today there were no suspects, and that police have been contacted to begin an investigation. Lt. Michael Glenning, head investigator for the fire marshal's office, determined the cause of the fire, Christmas said. Christmas said the formal ruling was that the fire was "incendiary." He would not provide details on how the fire was set or how fire officials decided it was arson. The fire burned in a windowless 80-by-120 foot storage room which contained thousands of insurance files. Fire officials called it the most difficult high-rise fire they have ever had to fight in the city. Firefighters were forced to drill several 18-inch holes through a concrete ceiling to reach the fire scene. Officials said the storage room reached oven- like temperatures and was filled with smoke, although the fire itself could not be seen. The fire was confined to the storage room. The fire began at 4:16 p.m. on May 30 and increased to eight alarms the following morning. Firemen had called it under control late on the evening of the day it began, but it suddenly increased in intensity. It was not declared out until the evening of June 1, although firefighters remained on the scene the next day checking for hotspots. Most firefighters' injuries consisted of eye problems caused by the acrid smoke from the chemically-treated paper that was burning. About 1,500 Penn Mutual employees and building tenants were evacuated during the fire.

Over eighteen years, from 1771 until his death, Benjamin Franklin (1706-90) composed an unfinished record of his life's tribulations and successes. Written in simple, often humorous language, The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin offered readers in the new United States an accessible, exemplary narrative of American upward mobility.
