Some Duplexes and a Sweet Rehab on Ellsworth

In neighborhoods like Callowhill or West Poplar, it's not such a big deal to live near the viaduct since it's 1) no longer used by trains, and 2) turning into one what will be one of the coolest parks in Philadelphia. In Point Breeze and Grays Ferry, not so much.

I DON'T MEAN TO BE TRASHY...

I moved to the neighborhood 8 weeks ago and am distressed by the amount of garbage on the streets. I bought a picker-upper and did a major bagging a few weeks ago and was a lovely, but only, temporary fix. I put in a complaint with SWEEP and we shall see if they respond. I am not a block captain or neighborhood leader but would welcome the company in this mission if anyone else is willing.

  • Hello Pee Bee,

You said something very interesting when you mentioned that the business pay for the service. I am not sure where you are in Point Breeze, but where I am between Morris and Moore, there are, maybe, 5 businesses in the area and very spread out. Perhaps as the area attracts more commercial interest there will be some movement in that direction.

  • Update:

I called the 311 line yesterday. The area in the photo that began this post is so filled with trash (again) and as the owner of the property is not stepping in, I decided to take the step recommended by D.M. (see above).

    Update:

I called the 311 line yesterday. The area in the photo that began this post is so filled with trash (again) and as the owner of the property is not stepping in, I decided to take the step recommended by D.M. (see above).

I spoke with a man named Alfredo who is so good at his job. Based on my description of the issue, he assessed it to be both a sanitation violation and Illegal dumping and was filing two different cases. Within the next 5 days someone will go to the location, speak to the occupant and contact the owner of the property, give them a warning and explain their responsibility as well as educate them as to best practices when dealing with trash. Then the trash will be cleaned up and if any of the many pieces of trash contains someone's personal address info that person will be ticketed for illegal dumping.

Should this happen again, he encouraged me to call again (as many times as is needed, he said). The second time the owner will be ticketed.

Based on my experience, I highly recommend calling 311.

    I'll keep you posted.

Phila. eateries shut for rodents, lack of food safety smarts
There are three health violations that are sure to temporarily shut down an eatery in Philadelphia: no hot water, a rodent infestation, and not having an employee on site who has passed a food safety course. But it's the last infraction - having no one on duty trained to prevent food poisoning - that triggers the overwhelming number of closures.

The eateries listed below were asked to close temporarily following inspections by the Philadelphia Department of Health between June 16 and June 24.
