With the support of Cognizant we are working with a team of young adults who work at the People's Emergency Center (PEC) in West Philadelphia as 'Community Connectors'. After analyzing what they do as Community Connectors, they identified various ways they could use design to have a greater impact in their work. From this list they prioritized four things where they thought they could have the most impact given the time, needs and budget. These four things include, developing 'Community Building Bags' to better distribute information and food in the community; creating gorgeous, affordable pop-up thank you trophies to improve organizationl volunteerism; fabricate small community message boards for businesses; and design-build a large prototype community message board/gathering spot for the intersection of 42nd and Lancaster (to be built in the summer, 2014). A majority of the program takes place at our shared civic innovation workshop, the Department Of Making + Doing. The Connectors are supported by LISC and we are excited that the Surdna Foundation is supporting the continuation of this program in 2014/2015.
