Acres of Neglect

What can we do to force City agencies that own vacant properties maintain them? Almost the entire block of 1400 S. Hanson St. is owned by an alphabet soup of City agencies and it looks horrible. Contributing to the ruin of our neighborhood.

Police said that about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, a 45-year-old homeless man went to an acquaintance's house on the 3200 block of Memphis Street in Port Richmond. The male resident allowed the homeless man to stay for the night and returned to sleep.

At about 1 a.m. Thursday, a 34-year-old man was shot in the head and critically wounded on the 5600 block of Angora Terrace in Southwest Philadelphia.

According to a witness, police said, a gray minivan with a temporary tag was seen leaving the shooting. Officers spotted a 2008 gray Dodge Caravan nearby, on the 5700 block of Baltimore Avenue, and stopped the vehicle. Two men who were in the van were being questioned by Southwest Detectives.

Moments before, police said, the victim had been walking south on Belmont Avenue toward Lancaster and was arguing with his girlfriend on his cellphone when three men walked by him. One of them "said something to him about being tough," according to a police report.

The victim then walked to the Chinese takeout, at 4510 Lancaster Ave., and was waiting in the doorway for his food when the three men he encountered earlier walked into the middle of street. One then began shooting at the victim, police said.
