Hey Donald Trump, African Americans Heard You Loud and Clear

Kenyatta: Trump wants to know what African Americans have to lose by taking a chance on him. The answer: Everything. Late last week, in his umpteenth "foot in mouth" moment, Donald J. Trump rhetorically asked African Americans a question that in my mind perfectly synthesized this election and Trump's used car salesman pitch.

A mass of convection is organizing near Puerto Rico, threatening the island and, potentially, South Florida with heavy rains.

Some Philly pools close tomorrow: List of 2016 dates
Philadelphia is in the middle of a heat wave, with a scorching weekend on tap, but some of the city's public pools will close before the hottest weather hits. Philadelphia's 70 free public pools (the most per-capita of any city in the country) begin to shut down for the season on Friday, just as temperatures are set to soar, with triple-digit heat indices forecasted for Saturday and Sunday.

  • I love children and would love to be a lifeguard in any one of the pools......if I could swim. I'm sure I would be turned down if I contacted the city. However, if you are saying that the city would take anyone to be a lifeguard, then the problem's already solved. Dennis, need I remind you that closing of the pools in such hot weather is no sarcastic matter but a very serious one.

  • Gina, I am in total agreement with you. Furthermore, the city does this every year.
Why not hire as Gina has stated, it would give the teens a nice summer job and they could work up to Labor Day. Gina's thoughts are excellent and I hope and pray the powers that be take heed.

Editor's Note: A version of this story was published in the fourth issue of Extant, a publication of the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia. The red brick, turreted tower of the Engine 46 Firehouse peers over I-95 like a vintage periscope rising above a concrete intruder.

Mapping 10 years of Philadelphia block parties
North Philly and West Philly are far and away the block party champions, though the Port Richmond area is an important outlier. The West Philly and North Philly zipcodes were in a class of their own, averaging somewhere between 5,250 and 5,500 block parties over 10 years, while South Philly zipcodes averaged closer to 3,500.

Meet Philly's new crop of rising restaurant groups
When Stephen Starr's restaurant holdings swelled to a dozen or more in the early 2000s, he was unique in Philadelphia. Though there's still nothing quite like the Starr empire - not here or in most other cities - he's no longer that much of an outlier.
