Today's featured Shop on the Square artist is Amy Meltzer, who hand dyes silk scarves and shawls using Shibori techniques. The techniques she uses to create patterns in the fabric include folding and clamping shapes to the fabric, wrapping the fabric around a pole or rope, and wrapping the fabric with string. Many scarves are dyed more than once to create layers of texture and color, resulting in work that is both beautiful and useful. This medium of dyeing silk gives Meltzer great joy in the handling of the materials and equipment, in being able to work on her feet, and in balancing the planning and precision required in Shibori dyeing with the improvisation of creating new designs and colors.
